I've made these using packaged frosting for the filling and then dip them til covered in melted minted chocolate pieces that I picked up at the craft store. They are as good as the mint Girl Scout cookies.

okay - where does the choc syrup come in play.

I like the Nabisco Choc Wafers with whipped cream - recipe on the box - cookies are expensive but well worth making the icebox cake. Tastes better the second day when all the whipped cream softens the choc wafer.

Wafer cookies are Nabisco Famous Wafer. My great aunt has passed down a recipe that you stack the cookies 3 or 5 cookies high. Whip 1 small carton of heavy whipping cream with 1 cap of vanilla extract (small bottle cap), and powder sugar to taste (we use about 1/4 cup). You stack cookie, whipping, cookie until you have the height you want. It is so easy, but you have to make these a day ahead because the cookie gets soft cake-like. You must refrigerate. At Christmas use Peppermint extract.

OK, apart from the fact that you can't get chocolate wafers here, this is all clear to me - although as others have pointed out, I think that chocolate and fudge sauce flavourings would be quite similar. If you want a really chocolatey filling, sift in some cocoa powder instead, and then add milk to achieve desired consistency. I've made buttercreams flavoured with fruit cordials - they work well, and provide natural flavouring, and colouring to the filling (cherry was very successful).

I divided the icing filling into 5ths and added: 1/4 tsp. almond extract and yellow food coloring; 1/4 tsp. mint extract and green food coloring; 1/2 tsp. raspberry extract and pink food coloring; 1/2 tsp. orange extract and orange food coloring; and mixed 1/2 tsp. instant expresso with 1/4 tsp. water. I just chose things I had in the pantry that seemed good, and are they delicious!

You can also take a large marshmello. Just put one one each cookie, put under broiler for a few minutes, then top with another cookie. It's even better if the second cookie has chocolate spread on it.

kfowler, I'm right there with you. (By the way, love Food Lion! Publix carries them, too here in SC.) A holiday frozen-favorite for those wafers is to make a cake/log with them. Get a glass bread pan and a pack of chocolate wafers, heavy whipping cream and vanilla. We make our own vanilla whipped cream and start stacking the wafers with the cream in between until we fill the pan. Then we coat the whole thing with more whipped cream and freeze it. YUM!!!

The chocolate wafer cookies are found in the ice cream condiment section at our grocery store- where the ice cream cones and toppings are located. I live in Wilmington, NC and get them at a store called Food Lion. By the way, the wafers do make a yummy ice cream sandwich. I use them to make another Martha Stewart cookie called chocolate ganache cookie. They're very good but do have to be kept refrigerated.

                Hey Cookie Folks,,
I'm guessing that we should add a flavored extract and some food coloring to the divided fillings, say orange extract and some orange food coloring. We could also add some marshmello creme flavored with the chocolate syrup or other more liquid flavorings. I love the bright pretty colors of the fillings.I agree that our imaginations are the limit here. I love almond flavor too!

I think that the chocolate syrup/hot fudge sauce is added in the "stir in desired

The chocolate syrupor choclate fudge is for chocolate or fudge filling, it is used as the flavoring agent. The ones in the picturewith the brown fillings are what they look like. To make them a dark brown, you would need to use so much syrup or fudge sauce that it would be too runny.

Confusion about a recipe isn't very encouraging. This recipe is simple and eliminating the choc syrup or fudge sauce is an easy decision, as is adding flavoring and food coloring, but mistakes in recipes are a bad thing.

The chocolate syrup or fudge sauce is used as a flavoring!! These just are so simple. I have done basically the same thing, sometimes using the whipped cream then freeze them so they are similar to ice cream bars.

I think the chocolate syrup is added to the icing (some appear to have chocolate filling). I would also think you could do whatever you like - such as adding food coloring and flavorings - pale yellow with lemon might be nice - or pale pink and peppermint, or wintergreen and pale green - which would go nice with the chocolate wafer!

The recipe said to "stir in desired flavorings to taste". I think the chocolate syrup/sauce is just one of the "flavorings" they have recommended. I would add enough to my own taste.

Very true--directions are incomplete. I think it is implied that you add the syrup or hot fudge into the filling mixture. In which case, you probably wouldn't need to thin it with milk. Too bad these steps were overlooked. Could be a good recipe.

The chocolate syrupor choclate fudge is for chocolate or fudge filling, it is used as the flavoring agent. The ones in the picturewith the brown fillings are what they look like. To make them a dark brown, you would need to use so much syrup or fudge sauce that it would be too runny.

Another way to use the chocolate wafers.. make "sandwiches , using real whipped cram OR Cool Whip... make a small Use real CREAM or Cool Whip for the Between cookies".Using the wafers make a pile then lay them out log fashion.. use all the wafers. then put the icing all over the log. completely covered now by Cream. Refigerate over-night. Cut on the diagonal. Great/Pretty dessert.

I think the chocolate syrup can be used as a flavoring or you can leave it plain.

I think it is the Stir in desired flavorings and option of chcoloate syrup or the fudge sauce. Just guessing

Confusion about a recipe isn't very encouraging. This recipe is simple and eliminating the choc syrup or fudge sauce is an easy decision, as is adding flavoring and food coloring, but mistakes in recipes are a bad thing.

                Wow, these cookies are GOOD!

Maybe you're suppose to add some of the chocolate to the icing to flavor it. Who knows, or dollop some syrup on top for added fun.....

Where can the chocolate wafers be purchased? I have looked at all the grocery and super stores here and no one has them.

I should think the flavorings is the chocolate syrup or hot fudge...no?

I think the chocolate syrup and hot fudge sauce is for flavoring in the icing.
"stir in desired flavorings to taste"

                Somthing is missing?!

The syrup andfudge sauce are the desired flavorings in the recipe, last sentence, step 1. Only add a little to taste until it is the flavoring that you like.

At the end of step one it say stir in desired flavorings.. I think this means the chocolate.. if you look next to the picture it also says try more things like jam or peanut butter

The chocolate syrup is for a flavoring for the filling, I think. I'd say add a little at a time so you don't mess with the consistency too much.

What are you supposed to do with the chocolate syrup? What is missing from the recipe or was the chcolate syrup a mistake?

So what is the bottled chocolate syrup and/or hot fudge sauce used for? The picture and directions indicate food coloring and flavorings were added, but I don't see any chocolate on chocolate...do you?
