Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water 1 teaspoon unsalted butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup long-grain white rice, rinsed

Directions

Bring water, butter, and salt to a boil in medium saucepan. Stir in rice and return to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and cook until rice is tender and has absorbed all the liquid, 16 to 18 minutes (check only toward end of cooking time). The rice should be studded with craters, or steam holes, when it is ready. Remove from heat and let steam, covered, for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: 5.0 stars 02/23/2020 I love this recipe! It works perfectly for long grain basmati rice that we buy in bulk from Costco! I always rinse the rice a couple times so that it is not too sticky, and the 1:1 ratio is perfect! I cook 4-6 cups of rice at any given time, so I usually add about 1/2 cup extra water to compensate for evaporation while I wait for it to boil, and then cover it one the rice goes in! My brother tried to tell me it wouldn’t work but it always does for long grain! I only keep it on the heat for 15 minutes and then usually keep it on the same eye, off of course, for the last 10 minutes. It’s always a hit with my family!

Martha Stewart Member Rating: 4 stars 11/20/2018 The rice was perfect fluffy and delicious, but, I added 1/4 cup more water to the 1 cup and after boiling let simmer for 12 minutes, very yummy.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: 1 stars 09/10/2018 The recipe is wrong. You should use 2 cups of water, not 1. Found that out the hard way because I didn’t read the comments first.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 02/28/2017 Sorry Martha (or whoever actually wrote this). You're absolutely wrong on this basic recipe! The recipe needs double the amount water to the uncooked rice.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: 1 stars 07/30/2014 The ratio for this recipe is wrong. Rice should be cooked with 1:2 ratio of rice to water. If you have 1 cup dry white rice, use 2 cups of water to cook it.
