Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs 2 tablespoons milk 4 large slices challah or Italian Bread, (cut 3/4 inch thick) 4 ounces thin semisweet chocolate bar 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Directions

In a large, shallow dish, whisk together eggs and milk; set aside.

Form two sandwiches with the bread and chocolate (break chocolate as necessary to cover bread without extending over edges); dip both sides of sandwiches in egg mixture to coat.

Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat; transfer sandwiches to skillet. Cook, pressing occasionally with a spatula, until golden, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Cut in half, and dust with confectioners’ sugar before serving.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 12/28/2016 Made this tonight. What a delicious and simple recipe -- my sandwiches were warm, gooey, and ready to eat in under 10 minutes! I only had bulk chocolate (not bar form), so had to chop that up. If you're using chopped chocolate: be careful when flipping the sandwiches in the egg-milk mixture, and again when flipping the sandwiches in the frying pan.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 10/21/2014 It is super yummy. I added ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and pumpkin spices to the eggs and milk. The filling was hazel butter. Then when it was done, I added honey and walnuts.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 08/24/2011 I made this dessert for a ladies luncheon. I followed the recipe except I added some sliced fresh strawberries I bought at my local farm. I simply placed the slices on top of the chocolate. This was superb. Everyone asked for the recipe. It is simple to make. Try it, I am sure you will love the ease in making and the final taste of this dessert.
