Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces and chilled
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk, plus more for brushing
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract
  • Fine sanding sugar, for sprinkling

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, oats, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut butter into oat mixture until the mixture resembles a coarse meal; whisk in dried cherries. In another medium bowl, mix together egg, buttermilk, and vanilla and almond extracts until well combined. Add egg mixture to flour mixture; mix until well combined.

Turn out dough onto a lightly floured work surface; roll out to a 1-inch-thick 8-by-6-inch rectangle. Cut biscuits into eight 2-by-3-inch rectangles using a sharp knife; transfer biscuits to prepared baking sheet. Brush biscuits with buttermilk and sprinkle with sanding sugar.

Transfer biscuits to oven and bake until tops are lightly browned, 18 to 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool slightly before serving.

I followed the receipe exactly and found the scones very dry and crumbly - I might try the receipe again and add more buttermilk etc ... and perhaps a little more sugar.

I have made these five times now and everyone loves them! I have a new oven and they do take about 25-27 minutes to bake. I've tried them with dried blueberries and craisins but the cherries are the best. Try adding a little fresh lemon zest. That is a great taste with the cherries.

These are delicious! However, mine also took a little longer than the listed baking time. Mine took about 30 minutes. Next time I make these, I'm going to substitute the dried cherries with orange flavored dried cranberries (from Trader Joe's).

this recipe is easy enough that you can measure the dry ingredients and keep them in a ziplock bag till you are ready to add the butter dried fruit and wet ingredients, mine didn't come out flaky but they were golden brown and i have a crappy oven so i didn't want to keep them in there to long did cook them for 25 minute so longer might make them more flaky

I made these and they took longer than the stated time in this recipe(more like 40 minutes). Please look at them before you remove them or they will be fully baked.

This recipe looks delicious and a good alternative to store-bought bars, I will probably use dried cranberries or dried blueberries that I have in my pantry instead of the dried cranberries, can't wait to make this!

I'm allergic to dried fruit, so I substituted 1 small apple and my own dried grated coconut to equal the amount of dried cherries. They came out divine. I had no idea what a scone was until my daughter married a Brit.

Not being a cherry fan (sorry, George), I used dried-apricots, much to my greater satisfaction!
